Laminectomy is a surgical procedure used to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and spinal nerves. It is an effective technique for treating conditions such as spinal stenosis and herniated discs.

At COPAC, our main goal is to improve your quality of life and relieve pain and discomfort caused by any spinal condition. With cutting-edge technology and a patient-centered approach, we are committed to providing exceptional service and optimal results.

Why is a laminectomy performed?

Laminectomy is a surgical technique used to treat conditions in the lumbar or cervical regions of the spine, including cases of spinal stenosis, herniated discs, tumors, and other vertebral injuries. It is also performed when back pain persists after medical treatment.

The purpose of laminectomy is to remove the “lamina” (portion of bone that is part of the vertebra in the spine) to reduce pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, thereby relieving pain and improving spinal function.

Benefits of Laminectomy

Laminectomy is characterized by providing significant benefits to the operated patients. Some of them are:

Pain relief

Laminectomy is very helpful in relieving chronic pain in the back or legs caused by compression of spinal nerves.

Improved function

By releasing pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, laminectomy improves the function and mobility of the spine.

Treatment of specific conditions

Laminectomy is effective in treating conditions such as spinal stenosis, herniated discs, and spinal injuries.

Improved quality of life

By reducing pain and improving function, patients can lead more active lives and perform daily activities more comfortably.

Benefits of Laminotomy

Lamitomy can have several benefits, including:

Pain relief: By creating more space for the nerves, pressure is reduced and pain is decreased.

Improved neurological function: By removing pressure on the nerves and spinal cord, laminotomy markedly improves neurological function resulting in increased mobility and sensitivity.

Treatment of specific conditions: With laminotomy it is possible to effectively address herniated discs, spinal stenosis and tumors, being able to restore health and quality of life.

Shorter recovery time: Compared to other, more invasive surgical procedures, laminotomy generally involves a shorter recovery time. This allows patients to return to their daily activities more quickly.

Lower risk of complications: Laminotomy is also considered a less invasive surgery, which reduces the risk of surgical complications.

Laminectomy Procedure

There are two common types of laminectomy: cervical laminectomy and lumbar laminectomy. In both cases, the procedure begins by administering general anesthesia to the patient to ensure that they are completely asleep and cannot feel pain during the procedure. It is then placed in a suitable position to allow optimal access to the cervical or lumbar spine (as the case may be).

Next, the surgeon makes an incision in the back of the neck (cervical laminectomy) or in the back of the back over the lumbar region (lumbar laminectomy), to expose the spine (the size and location of the incision may vary depending on the patient’s specific condition and the surgeon’s preferences).

Once the dissection is achieved, a portion of the bone that forms the vertebra (cervical or lumbar) is carefully removed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, this is done with specialized surgical tools.

In addition to the removal of the bone, other tissues such as ligaments or bony protrusions, which are compressing the nerves and spinal cord in that segment of the spine, can also be removed.

Once the procedure is complete, the incision is closed with sutures or surgical staples and bandages or dressings are placed to protect the wound.

Preparing for the Procedure

It is important for the patient to prepare properly before surgery. Below, we will mention some of the steps to follow during this stage:

Communication with the specialist: Talk to your doctor about the procedure and make sure you understand the benefits and risks.

Previous exams: Your doctor may order a series of tests before surgery (blood tests, X-rays, or MRIs).

Drugs: Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking (prescription, over-the-counter, and supplements). You will probably need to adjust your medication before surgery.

Medical History: Provide the specialist with detailed information about your medical history, mentioning any pre-existing medical conditions, allergies, or previous surgeries.

Diet and fasting: Follow your doctor's instructions about what to eat and drink before surgery. You may need to fast for a specific period of time before the procedure.

Quitting smoking: If you smoke, it is advisable to stop smoking before surgery, as this can negatively affect healing and increase the risk of complications.
