Specialized Hip Procedures

Hip joint and musculature

Our hip doctors mention that the coxofemoral (hip) joint joins the thigh bone with the pelvis as a perfect gear of 2 main pieces: On the one hand, the end of the femur in an almost completely spherical shape and on the other a cavity where it fits with great precision, located in the pelvic bone.

In such a way that it is thanks to this perfect mechanical model that the hip joint (which also has a whole muscular system that surrounds it), is able to support the weight of our body and intervene in its displacement.

However, sometimes this mechanism begins to present problems in its optimal functioning due to a degenerative disease or other related factors; it is therefore necessary to consider the placement of a hip prosthesis. That is why, for the implantation of hip prostheses, we use precise techniques that allow us to offer and guarantee the best results.

Hip arthroplasty

When the hip joint must be replaced in its entirety, the procedure performed by a hip doctor whereby an artificial prosthesis is placed is known as hip arthroplasty. Basically, this surgery consists of removing the femoral head and preparing the cavity for implant placement; removing the damaged cartilage and artificially shaping the space to house and ensure the movement of the new femoral head.

In any case, when hip arthroplasty is performed, the aim is to achieve 2 fundamental objectives:

Ensure mechanical stability (fixation of the prosthesis at the time of surgery).

Guarantee biological stability (bone-prosthesis union) that will be achieved progressively as time goes by; thus ensuring greater longevity of the prosthesis.

Arthroscopic hip surgery

Arthroscopic hip surgery is another surgical procedure that seeks to provide relief from specific problems that affect the coxofemoral joint. Therefore, this consists of making small cuts at specific points of the hip to introduce surgical instruments and equipment that facilitates visualization, called an arthroscope.

Our hip specialists say that eClairvoyantly, it is a minimally invasive technique that offers a quick recovery, which makes it quite attractive. However, it is not possible to apply it to every case; the list of its possible applications is quite small. That is why, among the cases that may require arthroscopic hip surgery, are the following:

Patient with bone and/or cartilage debris inside the hip causing pain.

Patient with hip impingement syndrome.

Patient with a ruptured labrum (tissue that lines the socket of the bone to prevent the femur from slipping out of place).

Undoubtedly, hip specialists determine these conditions based on the previous analyses they perform and will establish treatment alternatives according to each reality.

Services We Offer

Our hip specialists offer a wide range of services geared towards the care of the coxofemoral joint. Here’s a brief description of each of them:

Hip arthroplasty

Hip replacement surgery is surgery in which the damaged hip joint is replaced with an artificial prosthesis. This surgery is commonly performed in cases of severe arthritis, hip fractures, and other conditions that cause pain and limitation in the joint.

The prosthesis used can be made of metal, plastic or ceramic, and aims to restore the function of the musculoskeletal system and relieve hip pain.

Arthroscopic hip surgery

Hip arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that uses an instrument called an arthroscope to visualize and treat problems in the hip joint.

This type of surgery is performed through small incisions in the skin, resulting in a faster and less painful recovery compared to traditional open surgeries.

Arthroscopic hip surgery can be used to treat conditions such as femoroacetabular impingement syndrome, labral injuries, and certain types of cartilage injuries.

Hip revision surgery

This surgery is performed when a previously implanted hip replacement needs to be replaced or repaired. It may be necessary due to wear, loosening, or infection of the prosthesis.

Hip-sparing surgery

This type of hip surgery is performed to treat conditions in early stages, with the goal of preserving the natural joint as much as possible. Examples of hip-sparing surgeries include hip osteotomy and labral repair.

Consultations and evaluations

Our hip specialists perform thorough consultations and detailed evaluations for an accurate diagnosis and an appropriate treatment plan for each patient. During these consultations, diagnostic tests such as X-rays or MRIs may be performed, and the patient’s symptoms and medical history are discussed.

Other hip treatments

Before any surgery, some non-surgical treatments may be considered to effectively treat various hip conditions. These may include: physical therapy, pain management medications, cortisone injections, and other conservative therapies.
