This condition causes pain, numbness, and tingling in the leg. It is a common cause of sick leave in Spain.

About 40% of people will suffer from sciatica pain at some point. Sedentary jobs and an inactive lifestyle increase the risk.

Sitting for too long can cause herniated discs, a leading cause of sciatica. The tension in the spine increases, compressing the sciatic nerve.

People between the ages of 20 and 50 are more likely to suffer from herniated discs. This puts them at higher risk for sciatica related to sitting.

There are ways to prevent sciatica, even if you spend a lot of time sitting. Maintain good posture and exercise regularly.

Take frequent breaks to stretch your legs. This will help reduce the risk of this painful condition.

Sciatica is a painful condition that affects people of all ages. It is most common in middle-aged adults. Up to 40% of people will experience sciatica at least once in their lifetime.

With proper treatment , about half recover in about 6 weeks. However, without treatment, the pain can persist for months or years.

Herniated Discs and Sciatic Nerve Compression

Herniated discs are the most common cause of sciatica, responsible for 90% of cases. It occurs when the nucleus of the intervertebral disc escapes, compressing the sciatic nerve.

This compression can lead to inflammation and severe pain . The pain spreads from the lower back to the leg and foot.

Lumbar spinal stenosis and other spinal disorders

Lumbar spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal, can also cause sciatica. Spondylolisthesis, where one vertebra slides over another, is another possible cause.

In rare cases, tumors or infections in the spine can compress the sciatic nerve. This can also lead to sciatica symptoms.

Age, profession and sedentary lifestyle as risk factors

People between the ages of 30 and 40 are at increased risk for sciatica. Some professions increase the risk, such as those that require heavy lifting or heavy driving.

Obesity and a sedentary lifestyle can also contribute to sciatica. These factors increase the strain on the spine.

Regular exercise and good posture can help prevent sciatica. These lifestyle changes reduce the chances of developing this condition.

Sitting Time and Sciatica

Sitting for a long time can make sciatica worse. Poor posture puts pressure on the spine and nerves. This irritates the sciatic nerve and aggravates the symptoms.

How Prolonged Sitting Can Aggravate Sciatica

Sitting for hours strains your back, neck, and shoulders. This weakens the abdominal muscles and worsens posture. It also increases lower back discomfort and other symptoms of sciatica.

Sitting puts pressure on the buttocks and thighs. This further irritates the compressed sciatic nerve. People with sedentary jobs tend to have more sciatica problems.

Importance of taking breaks and stretching exercises

To prevent symptoms, take breaks and move regularly. Get up and walk around every hour, even if it’s just for minutes. This relieves pressure on the spine and improves circulation.

Gentle stretches on these breaks relieve muscle tension. They also reduce the risk of lower back discomfort. Try these simple exercises:

Gentle forward bends to stretch your lower back

Seated or standing hamstring stretches

Gentle twisting of the spine while sitting

Yoga or Pilates strengthen the core muscles and improve posture. This reduces the risk of sciatica from sitting. Combine rest and moderate activity to manage sciatic pain.

Prevention and Treatment of Sitting-Related Sciatica

Prevention and Treatment of Sitting-Related Sciatica

Weight control and maintaining good muscle tone helps prevent sciatica.
