This condition curves the spine abnormally. There are treatment options and tips for managing it effectively.

In mild cases of scoliosis, specific exercises are observed and done. The exercises vary depending on the location of the curve. They include pelvic tilts and stretches of the latissimus dorsi muscle.

Good posture is key to reducing pain. Scientific Exercises for Scoliosis (SEAS) correct movement problems individually.

For children with more pronounced curves, braces are effective. They are recommended for bends greater than 25-30 degrees. They are useful in patients who are still growing.

Treatment depends on the severity and stage of growth. Surgery may be necessary in severe cases. Progressive curves that exceed 40-50 degrees may require surgical intervention.

Early diagnosis is crucial. Proper follow-up by spine specialists is important. Options range from exercises to surgery in severe cases.

Diagnosis of Scoliosis

The diagnosis of scoliosis is key to determining its presence and severity. Early detection is vital to avoid heart and lung problems. Pediatricians and schools perform checkups to detect signs in children.

The process begins with a detailed physical examination by the doctor. Posture and rib cage are evaluated. A neurological evaluation is also done to check for muscle weakness or abnormal reflexes.

Imaging Tests

Imaging tests confirm the diagnosis and determine the severity of the curve. X-ray is the most common tool for accurately measuring the degree of curvature.

In some cases, low-radiation systems are used. These create 3D models of the spine for more detailed evaluation.

MRI may be recommended in specific situations. It provides detailed images of soft tissues and can identify underlying causes of scoliosis.

Scoliosis is defined as a curvature of the spine of 10º or more. Surgery is considered when the curve measures 45° or more on X-rays.

Non-Surgical Treatments for Scoliosis

Scoliosis affects 3% of children ages 9 to 14 in the United States. Girls are at higher risk than boys. It is crucial to explore non-surgical options to manage this condition.

Nonsurgical treatments for scoliosis seek to monitor the curvature and relieve pain. They also improve posture and function. The choice depends on the degree of the curve and the child’s development.

Observation

In mild cases, with a curve of less than 20°, observation every 3 to 6 months may be sufficient. Physical exams and x-rays are done to see if the curve progresses.

Physiotherapy and the Schroth Method

Physical therapy strengthens the muscles in your back and improves flexibility. This helps relieve pain. The Schroth method uses breathing exercises and postural correction.

This method seeks to improve spinal alignment and reduce curvature. It is a specialized approach to treating scoliosis.

Orthopedic Devices

For curves between 25° and 45° in growing children, orthopedic devices are used. Braces or splints prevent the progression of the curve. They are personalized and worn for much of the day.

Plastering by Mehta

In infants and toddlers with severe curves, Mehta casting is recommended. This procedure applies a body cast to guide the growth of the spine.

Early treatment of scoliosis is most effective, especially during puberty. Consulting with a spine specialist will help determine the best treatment for your child.

Scoliosis: When Surgery Is Necessary

Scoliosis surgery is considered when the curve of the spine exceeds 40-50 degrees in growing children. In adolescents, it is recommended if the curvature exceeds 45 degrees. Spinal fusion is a common technique that joins the affected vertebrae together.

If the curve is less than 40-50 degrees when the growth is complete, surgery is usually not necessary. The operation takes about 4 to 6 hours. Recovery time in the hospital is 3 to 4 days.

Complications are rare. Less than 5% of patients may experience nerve injury during surgery. About 20% of children may have lung problems up to a week later.

Pseudoarthrosis, where bone fusion does not heal well, affects 10-20% of patients. In adults, degenerative scoliosis is common, causing back pain and difficulty walking.

Surgery for degenerative scoliosis is recommended when nerves or spinal roots are involved. It may help if pain treatment has not been effective.
